Jaya Ekadashi Katha

According to the legend mentioned in the Padma Purana, Devraj Indra ruled in heaven and all the other gods lived happily in heaven. Once upon a time, Indra was doing a vihara with the nymphs in Nandan forest and singing Gandharva as per his wish.

Among these Gandharvas, the famous Pushpadanta and his daughter Pushpavati and Chitrasen and his spouse Malini were also present. Also, Malini's son Pushpavan and his son Mallyavan were also present.

On seeing Pushpavati Gandharva Kanya Mallyavan, she was fascinated by him and started running a business on Mallywan. He subdued Mallywan along with his form of grace and gaiety. That Pushpavati was very beautiful. Now they started singing to please Indra, however, due to their mutual fascination, their mind was confused.

Indra understood their love due to their not singing properly and the rhythm of the vocals and cursing them as an insult in it. Indra stated, "O fools! You will have disobeyed my orders, therefore you are a curse. Now each of you, as women and men, go to the world of death and take vampire form and enjoy the grace of your karma."

Listening to such a curse of Indra, he became very unhappy and started living his life in grief on the Himalayan mountain. They had no knowledge of smell, juice and touch etc. He was getting great sorrow there. He did not sleep even for a second.

It was very cold at that place, resulting from this, his hair would stand and the teeth of cold would ring. One day the vampire stated to her woman, "What were the sins that we had committed in an earlier life, which gave us this sad vampire. This vampire is better than suffering the grief of hell. We must always not commit any kind of sin now.

With the help of Divya Yoga, there was an Ekadashi referred to as Jaya of Shukla Paksha within the month of Magha. On that day he didn't eat something nor did any sin. He spent the day eating only fruits and flowers and sat under the Peepal tree in the evening with great grief. At the moment, the Sun God was setting.

It was extremely cold that night, due to which both of them were very unhappy due to cold and clung to each other like dead. He did not even sleep that night.
